GNU – The “Recursive Acronym”

GNU stands for “Gnu’s Not UNIX” and is the genius behind what most of us know as the Linux operating system. For those of you who instantly turn away from conversation because it sounds too “techie”, hold on tight. This subject has more to do with a free society than an operating system. This philosophy is all new to me, because I am NOT informed in the “computer world.” Having first been exposed to Linux OS by overhearing my knowledgeable computer-geek friends, and then by the documentary Revolution OS, I have come to this conclusion:

The Free Software Foundation, begun by Richard Stallman, who quit his job at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab to further this revolutionary philosophy, is righteous.

Basically, the FSF supports the freedoms of speech, press, and association on the Internet, the right to use encryption software for private communication, and the right to write software unimpeded by private monopolies. I am still educating myself with the vast amount of information on this subject and how it directly appeals to the ideas entertaining citizen controlled (as opposed to corporate controlled) free societies. I would love to hear from those in the know to further my understanding.

May all information be free!

Am I Blue? (Or Just Violet?)

After the election, I had many conversations invlolving red states and blue states. Surely, the sea of red has some blue representation, right?

Yes, and here is the map that helps identify just how much red or blue each state has. Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed that since Dubya, our country is communicating in terms of color. Like in kindergarten. Maybe someone could teach our prez how to play nice with others and share his toys.

Now you know where NOT to move.

Courage — Free For The Brave

Seems like Eminem has been stocking up on courage lately. If you haven’t seen his new video, do yourself a favor and check it out.

“Mosh” by Eminem

Especially in these times, when speaking out against the establishment has come to mean that the propaganda machine will make you that unpatriotic commie traitor McCarthyism always warned you about, I applaud (in a rioutus kinda way…) Eminem’s courage. I imagine he has had a special agent or ten drop by for a visit, and that’s not my idea of a relaxing afternoon.

When acts like Brittany Spears sends the message to just “listen to the President, ‘cuz he IS the president and all,” (by the way…great advice. Thanks a bunch, dumb-ass) it is refreshing to have an artist with a voice use it in a more constructive way. And it reminds me that the revolution WILL be televised. Thanks, Eminem.
